FOUNDED BY FREDRICK ERWIN KNOWLES, WHO BOUGHT THE LAND FROM FRANK DUCY AND WHO ORGANIZED THE RAYMOND GRANITE QUARRY IN WHAT HAS BEEN REFERED TO AS "DUCY'S ROCK PILE'"

IN 1899, THE RAYMOND GRANITE QUARRY BUILT A "SPUR" TRACK FROM THE QUARRY TO THE MAIN AT RAYMOND. THE RAILROAD WAS CALLED "KNOWLES SPUR" AND THE COMMUNITY WAS NAMED KNOWLES.

KNOWLES BUILT A SCHOOLHOUSE IN 1891, AND IN 1892 FRESNO COUNTY TOOK OVER THE SCHOOL. IN 1893 THE COUNTY WAS DIVIDED AND THE DISTRICT BECAME PART OF MADERA COUNTY

Monument is in Knowles, California, in Madera County on Knowles Rd. (County Road 606) 1/4 mile north of Granite Road, on the left. Located in front of the Hills Pride Inn, recognized as having one of the oldest liquor licenses in the state.
